Think HDL "healthy" and you want it high. LDL think "lousy" and you want it as low as possible. As for numbers it depends on who you are in terms of other risk factors for heart disease such as diabetes, high blood pressure and family history. If you have risk factors then your LDL should be less than 100 and HDL needs to be above 40 or 50. Generaly you want your total cholesteral to be below 200.
